Counseling Pedagogy

Acknowledging differences, not deficits!

My counseling pedagogy is to counsel and advise students from a Humanistic Perspective; based on cultivating an environment of safety, motivation, and empowerment.

“Humanistic Psychology is a perspective that emphasizes looking at the whole person, and the uniqueness of each individual. Humanistic Psychology asserts that people have free will and are motivated to achieve their potential and self-actualize.”

The goals of Humanistic Psychology include:

1. Empower individuals

2. Enhance well-being

3. Actively guide people towards fulfilling their potential

My goal as a Disabled Students Programs & Services Counselor is in direct alignment with the humanistic perspective. Striving to enhance the overall wellbeing of students by empowering and guiding them in vital personal and professional development.

Life skills that expand far beyond the classroom, such as:

   1. Effective and assertive

    communication

   2. Self-awareness

   3. Self-actualization

   4. Confidence building

   5. Accountability

   6. Advocacy

All the above are engrained in my counseling sessions.

The emotional, physical, and spirtual well-being of students matters. Discussions regarding self-care and stress management are important to assess a student’s capacity to perform well in class.
