Strengths/Challenges

Believing my greatest strength is the ability to develop a rapport with students, I pride myself on creating a safe environment for my students to express challenges and successes. Also, encouraging students to advocated for themselves. The connection and impact I have made, is reflected in retention. Many of the students that I serve return each semester, and multiple times per semester to get support.
As a counselor, I am always seeking ways to improve. Over the past year time management has been a challenge. Each student has unique needs, it is challenging to complete all required tasks in the allotted timeframe.
As a tenure track counselor in DSPS I’ve learned to facilitate a dual role learning to manage:
-
Advising and counseling hundreds of students
-
Completing hundreds of DSPS intakes
-
Authorize accommodations
-
Responding to many emails
-
Collaborating with various departments
-
Facilitating meetings with professors
-
Meet with concerned parents
-
Attend mandatory counseling meetings
-
Attend mandatory DSPS department meetings
-
Attend campus events
-
Fulfill committee obligations
-
Maintain adjunct status (just to name a few)
Time management and tasks prioritization are skills that I hope to improve in the upcoming year.
